MLS Cup 2011 Predictions

Houston Dynamo vs LA Galaxy

Well well, who expected the Houston Dynamo to make it to MLS Cup 2011?

Without Brad Davis?

If you answered yes to the first question, you are probably a Dynamo fan.  If you answered yes to the second question, I call BS.

Plenty expected the Galaxy to be here.

So who is going to win it?  I guess I have to go with the Galaxy.  They’ve got a few things going for them:

  1. They are playing at home
  2. Brad Davis is hurt
  3. They’ve already lost 4 MLS Cups.  Certainly they don’t want to lose another.

So I’m gonna say Robbie Keane gets a hat trick and the Galaxy win 4-2.  What do you think is going to happen?

Champions Cup Results

We are down to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and it is 2 MLS vs Mexico semi-finals. Both of my predictions were right!

I didn’t get to see a lot of the DC game, but watched the whole Houston game. I was impressed with the chanting Dynamo fans throughout the game, but more impressed with the 2-0 victory. The Dynamo came out and got exactly what they needed to advance.

The Dynamo now will face Pachuca (Mexico) on March 14th in Houston and travel to Pachuca on April 5th.

DC United will go up against Chivas (Mexico) on March 15th at RFK and go to Chivas on April 3rd.

See the official bracket at the official CONCACAF website.

CONCACAF Champions Cup Action

DC United and Houston Dynamo continue action in the CONCACAF Champions Cup tonite both in the 2nd leg of the quarterfinals.  My predictions - DC United gets anoter convincing win to cruise into the semis.  Houston wins a hard fought game to squeak into the semis.

Catch both games on Fox Soccer Channel tonite at 6pm and 8pm.  DC is up first.

Finally caught up with the CONCACAF Champions Cup

I had to DVR both the DC United and Houston Dynamo Champions Cup games earlier this week.  That in itself was not a problem, but:

Before watching the Dynamo game, I had Fox Soccer Channel on watching FA Cup highlights I think.  I see on the bottom of the screen ticker that the Dynamo lost.  Dammit, but I watched anyway.  I fell asleep and missed most of the 2nd half.  What was up with the red cards there, anyone?  And was that PK one of the least deserved PK’s you’ve seen in a long time?

Then last nite I was online playing some poker and my dad rang me up on IM.  I sent him the message that I was about to watch the DC United game and to not tell me the results at almost exactly the same time his message showed up “good win for DC huh!”.  Dammit dammit dammit, but I watched still.  Good job DC.  They didn’t look overly great, but I guess scoring 4 goals on the road is pretty damm good.  I wish I could place shots like Gomez was, those were quite nice!

Overall I think both teams will advance to the semi-finals.  I’m not sure if they could possibly play each other in the semi’s, but that would really be great if both MLS teams went to the final.  DC would really have to screw up to not get into the semi’s.

Oh, and FYI those of you who did not see the games:

DC United 4 - 1 CD Olimpia
Houston Dynamo 0 - 1 Puntarenas

MLS action starts up tomorrow

DC United and Houston Dynamo have important games tomorrow in the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.  DC United travel to Honduras to take on Club Deportivo Olimpia while Houston Dynamo travel to Costa Rica to take on Puntarenas Fútbol Club, a young club with goals of winning by a big margin.  Both of the MLS teams will have tough games, but have the advantage of finishing the home and away series at home.  Last year the Galaxy and the Revolution both lost out at this stage of the tournament, hopefully that is changed this year.  It is time the MLS starts to show some CONCACAF dominance!

Dwayne De Rosario wants to play for Toronto FC someday

It should be no surprise that Houston Dynamo star Dwayne De Rosario would someday like to play for his hometown new-boys Toronto FC.

In 1997 De Rosario played professional soccer in Toronto with the Toronto Lynx of the A-League for a short time before he went to play in Germany.

De Rosario isn’t about to give up on his Houston Dynamo quite yet. Don’t worry Dynamo fans, he’ll be around Houston for a little bit more at least.

thoughts about the final

Well I guess I don’t have a lot of thought about the actual game play itself, it was a pretty good game and my future news was wrong, as usual.

I can’t beleive ABC just doesn’t seem to get it.  Every fuckin sunday every channel (it seems) has pre-football shows on all morning, probably even channels that aren’t actually going to show a game even….  The MLS Cup rolls around and leading up to it, they have a fucking infomercial for the nu-wave oven or some crap.  come on ABC, just a half an hour would be great.  The actuall kickoff wasn’t until 15 minutes after the coverage started, but it seemed like it was all pre-recorded shit about Taylor Twellman and Brian Ching.   They deserve it, but it would have been that hard to ditch the infomercial?

Well enough of that.  I know it went to extra time and PK’s, but after the game they were as quick as they could be to drop coverage and go to news.  This is a final ABC, show us a little bit of it.  Even though I was kind of cheering for the Revolution, I still wanted to see the trophy presented to the Dynamo.  They are a good team and they deserve it.

The most impressive part of the game for me was the Dynamo fans.  That looks like a fun crowd to be in.  Maybe its just something about the orange teams, the orange the fans wear really sticks out.  It was quite a bit more impressive than the last Minnesota Thunder game I saw.

Even though I don’t consider myself a Revolution fan, I hope that team gets one soon.

Can’t wait until next season starts!!!!

Dynamo 3 Rapids 1

NE Revolution vs Houston Dynamo for the MLS Cup, just as my prediction was.  Finally I get a couple of games right.

Several players suspend or fined after matches last weekend

I really wish I could have watched the Dallas/Colorado game from this past weekend when the Rapids dumped FC Dallas out of the playoffs to see what waranted a six game suspension for FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala.  Six game suspension seems pretty harsh. I don’t remember there ever being a suspension longer (or even that long) in the history of the MLS.  I have been a fan since the league started, but I do admit there were years that something like this could have eassily gone un-noticed by me.

Mike Petke, Ricardo Clark, Claudio Suarez and even Steve Nicol were all fined while Juan Pable Garcia got a two game suspension.  That must have been an exciting couple of games last weekend.

I sure am looking forward to the games this Sunday!  Predictions?  Based solely on the play that I saw this last weekend I see NE Revolution vs Houston Dynamo playing for the MLS Cup.  Based on what I think from my usually completely wrong instincts, I see DC United vs. Colorado Rapids.  Final anwer: DC United vs Houston Dynamo.

Houston Dynamo end Chivas season

The 2nd quarterfinal of the night was a good one.  This game had it all, a red card, a penalty kick, a pissed off coach, a late goal, some bench clearing shenanagains after the final whistle, the end of the season for one team, a come from behind, and best of all it had some good exciting soccer!

Houston got their first goal on a PK in the 2nd half.  After seeing the replay I think it was a fair PK but that was not my initial thought.  Chivas seemed to go back into a defensive shell in the 2nd half being up by one goal on the aggregate, thats never a good idea.  The game seemed to be headed for extra time, but then in stoppage time Brian Ching put in the game winning goal.  I’m surprised there were no more cards issued after the final whistle.
